=== > Re: Cassini Mission to Saturn

INES member organisation ''Southern California Federation of Scientists'' (USA) has sent a letter to the INES office (26 Feb 1998) making the following points:

''Dear INES,
Please be advised that the SCFS is opposed to any INES participation in the Noflyby Campaign. Admittedly there is a small risk of a burn-up in the Earth atmosphere with a maximum worst-case number of deaths, based upon SCFS calculation, of 6,000 people (...)
''It is important that INES credibility on the truly gigantic problems of world peace and nuclear disarmament (as well as environmental pollution) not be diluted by participation in such a relatively small problem as Cassini. Our estimate of the importance of Abolition 2000 as compared with the Noflyby Campaign is at least 1:1,000,000,000.
''Therefore, we hope that precious INES resources will not be wasted on Cassini.
Cordially
Sheldon C. Plotkin, Ph.D.,P.E.
Member SCFS Executive Board''

=== > Canada: Science for Peace

With the support of the Canadian INES member Science for Peace, a very interesting poll on Canadian attitudes towards nuclear weapons has been conducted recently initiated by the Canadian Peace Alliance. According to the findings, the majority of Canadians believe that nuclear weapons pose a threat to world security rather than enhancing world security. When asked to choose between these two alternate perceptions, 75% of Canadians say that the existence of nuclear weapons make the world a more dangerous place. A summary of this poll was published via <abolition-caucus> which you can obtain from the WNII editor.

=== > NPT PrepCom Geneva, 27 April - 8 May 1998

Dear friends,
There is a lot of NGO material floating around currently via Internet. If you are interested in it while being a non-subscriber to the abolition-listservers (abolition-caucus, abolition-europe, etc.), you can contact me. I am collecting this material and can mail it to you. [see also ''INESAPlist references'' in this WNII issue]
However, I'd like to draw your attention to two major recent mailings:
--- Abolition 2000 Letter sent to all Embassies (which you could use as a draft for lobbying your own government)
--- Latest Update of the Schedule of NPT PrepCom Events
