MEMBER ORGANISATIONS' AND PROJECT GROUPS' NEWS

"SEU TIMES" 5/6-99

"SEU TIMES" is the electronic newsletter of the "Socio-Ecological Union", one of the Russian INES member organsiations. Its May-June issue of this year has the following contents:

"SEU TIMES" special issue on the release of Grigoriy Pasko

In a special SEU Times issue of 20 July 1999, SEU informs about the release of Grigoriy Pasko with the article below [edited]. Previously, INES had expressed its support for Pasko.

For the first time in Russian history, the Federal Security Bureau (FSB) failed in an espionage suit. According to the Russian Pacific Military Court Pasko is free of charge of espionage, but he is guilty of "misapplying his position" and should be amnestied. The judge has also issued special document indicating all the FSB's investigating bodies offences against the law discovered during the process.

The Vladivostok Military Court received more than 23,000 letters of support to Grigoriy Pasko from all over the world. We express our gratitude to everyone who contributed to the case by sending protests, covering events, distributing the information etc! This is our common victory!

Mr. Pasko, a commander in the Russian Navy, the correspondent of the newspaper of the Russian Navy in Pacific Ocean, "Boyevaya Vakhta"(Vladivostok), was in custody for 20 months. Pasko was arrested in November 20, 1997 on his way back from Japan. He was accused of high treason.

We will keep you informed.

Your congratulations will be welcomed in Vladivostok at:  < >

Earth Summit III 2002 at CSD 8

The CSD (UN Commission on sustainable Development) NGO Steering Committee has been initiating a series of informal discussions in preparation for this event. The purpose has been to raise or identify the major critical issues to be addressed and to highlight the process steps necessary to ensure the Summit's success.

The result of these discussions has been the production of an Earth Summit III non-paper. In consideration of the decision at CSD 7 to have further discussions on the Modalities for Earth Summit III, to take place at CSD 8, the CSD NGO Steering Committee is currently circulating this paper for further comment and input.

If you are interested in receiving this paper, please mail your request to the WNII editor.
