Re: WNII Appearance

Dear WNII readers,

You certainly noticed that the last few WNII issues have been quite lengthy. This is one of the reasons why, for a trial period, WNII will appear weekly from now on. Also, this will allow me to be more up-to-date.

Please don't hesitate to send to me your opinion on this change of the WNII appearance.

Yours,

Tobias Damjanov

Editor, WNII

NEPAL APPEAL: A University Does Need Help!!
^

Originally launched by the German INES member ''Scientists' Initiative Responsibility for Peace and Sustainability'', this solidarity campaign has also been endorsed by this year's INES Council Meeting.

To give you an idea what it's all about and how you could get involved, here are some extracts from the latest promotion leaflet:

.. Kathmandu University in Nepal with 22,000 students and 9,000 faculty and staff. There are shortages of everything; still, year after year, students are being taught there, lectures are held, and exams are given.

.. The project aims to furnish the two departments Physics and Chemistry at Nepal University with surplus that is no longer put to use in other parts of the world and often carelessly discarded....

.. The Physics and Chemistry departments do need:

(2) Recent research (published in the study "Dangerous Thermonuclear Quest") by the IEER has determined that proposed fusion experiments at a US government laboratory would violate the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT). Therefore, IEER believes that the University of California should suspend work on this project. IEER is circulating a corresponding letter for the signature of as many scientist, engineers, community activists, and other concerned people. Signed by IEER President Arjun Makhijani, the letter calls, among other things, on the Regents to initiate a public debate about the continuing role of the university in nuclear weapons research.
